Electric
Glider Duration and Spot Landing Contest
12,
September 2004 |
|
|
The Hong Kong Radio Control Soaring Society organized an
electric glider duration and spot landing contest on
Sunday, 12 September, 2004.
The contest was originally scheduled to be run on 22
August 2004 but was postponed due to poor weather and other reasons.
The venue of the contest is an abundant quarry
in Lamma Island. The flying site is on a big grassy field on the other
side of Sok Ku Wan. There is no road access to the site. This is
the first time an HKRCSS event was ever held in this remote but
wonderful place. A total of 41 participants
gathered in Sam Wan quay early in the morning.
Two speedboats and a Chinese Junk took us all
to the flying site. We arrived at Lamma island
on two waves because each speedboat can carry only 8 persons. The competition was started at 11:00am after the inspection of all the
electric gliders participated in the contest. The contest attracted some
top electric glider pilots with their powerful machines. Totally 18 pilots joined the contest.
Ah Shing was almost eliminated before the contest was started when his E-Twist
piloted by Master Leung crashed gracefully into ground on the first
practice flight! What's a disappointment for him after
weeks of preparation! Luckily,
he still has an electric Little White for
participating in the contest. The contest was
really tense. 40 second of motor driving period seems to be
insufficient as the thermal activities were a minimum in the morning.
But the situation was totally different. After the lunch break when the
solar ray was shining, the thermal activities were just wonderful, almost
all skillful pilots can achieve the maximum duration of 10 minutes. In
fact there were lots of applause when the gliders were speeding down
from high attitude in preparation for spot landing during the last 20
seconds of the 10 minute limit. It was just
amazing! Finally, 6 rounds of
contest were completed. The winner of the day is Y.C. Lui
with a convincing score of 64.63, congratulation!
C.M. got the highest mark in spot landing - a golden ten
with only 2 inches from the target! Well done!
What a wonderful day! HKRCSS wishes to thank the sponsors;
Radar Co. Ltd, Windrider
Aviation Co., Windfeel Model, and Waigo Model.

|

Arrived at the flying site and prepare for the

"I will use my Electric Twist for the contest, Master

|
|

See a movie how the glider was destroyed!
Poor Ah Shing had no plane to fly in the contest afterward! Master Leung
do you feel guilty? |

Concentration, not bad for duration, how about spot
landing?
|
|

Close enough but ....
|

5.1 meters! Out and no mark! |
|

Uncle Sing was ready for launching his weapon
|

Duration is ok, how about the spot landing. Click to

|

Allan was so concentrated on finding the thermal. 10
minutes, a full mark for duration, how about spot landing?

Allan. |
|

You never tell how nervous C.M. is in flying his
glider during the contest. Although the duration mark is not up to the
expectation but .....
|

he got a bingo in spot landing! Two inches from the
target, just unbelievable!
|
|

Recording the score in the scoreboard
|

Ah Mak and Patrick, this is an electric glider
contest. Why are you discussing hand launch gliders? |
|

After two rounds of contest, it is time to take a
break for the lunch. We needed to go to restaurant in the other side of
Sok Ku Wan by boat.
|

|

It was really nice to have a boat ride back to the
flying site after a full lunch
|

Contest resumed. Click to see how Eric launched his
Hawk 2000 |
|

Eric, take it easy, thermal duration may be the easy
part. How are about spot landing?
|

Come on, it is 5.1 meters and even you pull very
tight on the ruler, the result is still the same, Out and no mark!
|
|

Ah Kin is going to launch his Skysergio

landing |

Eric seems to be very relaxing. Easy man!

|
Women's quarter. The girls are really wonderful, they
are not interested in this sport but they have full support to their love
ones. |

Stanley is so busy working on the numbers. The
results of the day are: |
|

The fourth prize goes to Eric (right). His big hi-tech
thermal ship, Toco, stayed afloat easily but accurate spot landing may be a bit
difficult. |
The second runner up is Chester (right). His effort
of tuning a light thermal soarer really paid off, but his spot landing
accuracy was somehow disappointing! |
|

The first runner up is Ah
Kin (right).
He actually lose one round of
score because of battery problem, but he still maintained in the second
place, well done! |
Wow! Y.C. (right) is the
champion of the day! His effort in fine tuning
the landing skill and building his hi-tech weapon really pay off today.
Congradulation!
|
|

The spot landing prize goes to C.M. Wow! Only two
inches ..... away from the targeted position, amazing shot! |
A photo for the three winners |

Smile! The winners have done a professional contest
today! |
A group photo for us to remember. What's a wonderful day!
