The Hong Kong Radio Control Soaring Society organized a handlaunch glider duration contest on Sunday, 21 November 2004. It was the first time such a HLG contest was held in Lamma Island. The flying site is on an abundant quarry field in Suk Kwu Wan. A total of over 35 enthusiastic pilots and their guests participated in this event. Two waves of speed boat rides plus a slower Chinese junk ride took us all to the flying site. By the time of 10:30am, all people have arrived at the site and pilots who were joining the contest were busy in practicing and tuning their gliders. Most of these gliders were brand new and never flown before! This is certainly an impressive display of state-of-the-art DLG weapons. The DLG launching and soaring skills they showed are amazing too! If you look at the progress in DLG since last summer contest in Shum Chung, this is certainly a big step forward. A total of 15 pilots actually participated in the competition. The contest was divided into two parts; in the morning, the contest based on Task B rule was run and in the afternoon Task A was run. Since Task B is measured as duration time while Task A is measured as score from each increase of 30 second duration, the ranking lists from both Tasks are averaged to obtain the final ranking list. After a day of intensive competition, three rounds of contest for Task B were competed in the morning and five rounds of contest for Task A were competed in the afternoon. The champion of the day is Cheng Wan Kin. His efforts in fine tuning his modified Long Shot and practicing everyday weeks prior to the contest has really paid off. Congratulation! His convincing win is in no doubt propelling the local DLG standard to a higher level and we will have a hard time to catch up!
