Hand Catch Landing Contest
6 January, 2008

The first hand catch landing contest ever held in Hong Kong was successfully run in Clearwater Bay flying site on 6 January 2008.The wind condition of the day varied a lot making the contest very challenging for the contesting pilots. The rule for this contest is to allow each pilot to have two launches within one minute time frame. If he successfully catches the plane in the first attempt, he is awarded with 3 marks, 2 marks are awarded for the catch on the second attempt, 1 mark for the third attempt and zero mark thereafter. There are six rounds of contests, pilots fly one by one in each round. The scores for the best five rounds of a pilot will be used to the final position of this pilot. In order to protect the public and other onlookers nearby, a safety net was installed on the firing zone.

After an initial selection process, 5 pilots were qualified for the contest. The first pilot to fly is Lee Man who was wearing a red hat and a red coat in order to signify his fighting spirit. The second pilot to fly is Eric Wong who's not only mastered the skill in hand-catching sailplanes but also the skill to verbally cheating others to believe what is hidden behind him. The third pilot to fly is Lou Tsz Ming who is not only the boss of our sponsoring company, but also a devoted hand-catcher who likes to be crowned as the King of the Hand Catchers. The forth pilot to fly is a famous figure in Clearwater Bay whose nick name is Third Brother, and is well-known for his devoted efforts in training new comers. The last pilot to fly is Black Boy who is a guy with an emotionless face outside but a warm heart inside. His hand-catching skill is deeply implanted into every corners of his body. Certainly, there will be a fierce fight, the sprit is high, the atmosphere is intense, and ... is going to expose!

It is a bit disappointed when the first contestant, Lee Man, who tried to execute a roll to reduce his plane's speed after launch. His both attempts were failure as he miss-calculated the energy the plane retained for climbing back up the slope in weak wind condition. Other pilots performed poorly also under the intense pressure put on them when there were large crowd of onlookers nearby. The pilots performed just marginally OK in the second round. The tension built up only to see the award of a full 6 marks in the third round. Most pilots have finally entered into their optimal states with good scores obtained in round forth. Excited by Third Brother who has scored a full 6 marks in previous round, Lee Man finally showed off his master skill in hand-catching with a take-it-easy approach - a simple launch, an accurate steer return, a timed catch, and re-launch, return, and catch, all done perfectly in one go! just applause and applause! Tsz Ming tried to play more seriously with a calculated launch, unfortunately, the plane was sheered into a wrong course and crash-landed into the bush. He was even more careful in his second launch, but still the plane went too far out in the approach, so he decided to jump out to catch the plane. Wow! While holding his transmitter in left hand and trying to catch the plane with his right hand, he lose the balance and finally his plane sneaked away, what's a shame and waste of effort! Black Boy finally showed off his deeply implanted hand-catching skill in round forth. A perfect launch and return, and it seemed to be a perfect catch also, but just the moment before the plane was firmly held, it slipped out again! In a fraction of a second, Black Boy sheered his body towards the falling plane, and next the plane was already clipped between his arm and body, amazing! and the award of a full 3 marks!  Having seen how Black Boy mastered his hand-catching and recovering skill, Eric decided to use his body to stop the returning plane and then used his arm to clip the plane into position. This tactic was very successful in his first launch. However, in his second launch, he sheered the plane a bit high on approach and it headed straight onto his face, what's a pain with minor breeding! Although he grabbed his plane tight finally, other people were stunned by this unsafe performance! Anyway, he got a full 6 marks with no applause! After watching and learning the experience from previous 4 rounds, Tsz Ming came out with a new approach to catch his plane in round five. His first steered his plane towards him, knelt down, threw away his transmitter and used two hands to catch his plane! This tactic was also very successful which allowed him to gain full marks. This method of catching a sailplane is ugly and bitterly provocative! Anyway, the rules didn't mention whether using two hands to catch the plane is legal or not, so even it was undesired, the scores stayed.

After round five, Lee Man and Third Brother were leading with equal footing. Eric and Black Boy both were just 1 mark behind. There would be a close contest  in round six, and pilots concerned were getting more excited because live and death can be decided just by one single throw! The wind was getting stronger in round six. Lee Man was confident with this because he was well-trained under strong wind condition. First throw and catch was successful, then in the second throw, the plane went pretty fast and headed straight towards him under strong wind condition. His decision was no second attempt and to catch it despite of its speed! Wow! everybody was watching in silent without a single breath. What happened then was just a simple motion with a hand up, and the plane just fell right on his hand firmly! This perfect catch was awarded with lots of applause, well done! The contest was drawn to conclude with the title of King of Hand Catcher for Year 2008 being awarded to Lee Man with his super performance. Congratulation! Below is the score table:
