The Hong Kong Radio Control Soaring Society

DS contest will be run as scheduled

Pilot briefing in the Fei Ngo Shan Peak at 12:30pm

The Hong Kong Radio Control Soaring Society is organizing a dynamic soaring challenge fest on 30 March, 2008. This is the first of its kind in Kong Kong. Dynamic soaring is an extreme area of powerless glider flying. The goal of dynamic soaring is to fly the model glider to achieve extreme high ground speed by exploring the difference of air speed in adjacent layers of air masses. Please check on this link for detailed explanation.  The current world record of DS speed is over 300 km per hour. The contest will be held in Fei Ngo Shan peak on the east-facing slope. For safety reason we do expect that the onlookers as well as standby contestants be stationed in a designated area far away from the firing zone.

There will be two classes of contest; an EPP foamy class and an open class. The judging criteria are based on the highest speed achieved. Detailed rules are given below.

Contest Rules
  • For safety reason, the contesting planes must not have a sharp metal nose. CD will inspect the contesting plane for its structural rigidity
  • There will be only one plane on the DS track at a time
  • Each pilot has one minute to gain high after launch
  • Before one minute duration after launch, the pilot should enter the track (judged by the plane reaching the below-eye-level behind the ridge)
  • Should the pilot fail to enter the track within one minute after launch, he is disqualified with a DNS
  • The pilot can have a maximum of 20 circles on the track
  • Should he leave the track, re-enter the track is not allowed.
  • The fastest measurable speed during the 20 circles period will be counted as the score for a round
  • Should the pilot leave the track before 20 circles are completed, the fastest speed on all circles successfully run will be counted
  • Should the pilot fly too dangerously outside the designated DS track, CD can call off the run and give him a DNF
  • After completing 20 circles, the pilots should leave the track and land as soon as possible, and the subsequent circles will not be counted. Failure in landing doesn't affect the result.
  • Should he crash before the 20 circles are completed, he will be awarded with a DNF
  • There will be a number of rounds predetermined and agreed by all contestants before the contest
  • The fastest time in a round will be used as a normalization factor for other pilots' times and the final score will be calculated according to F3F type of scoring with no discard
