Contest Rules

The DIY glider contest was designed for accessing the abilities of r/c pilots in designing and making r/c gliders of their own and evaluating the flying characteristics of their creations. The judging criteria are based on original design, practicality and flyability. The scores will be awarded for two categories; static appearance and airborne maneuverability.

Static appearance: creativity, skill used in making the planes, construction complexity, and outlook beauty are the judging criteria in this category.

Airborne maneuverability: contesting pilot has to perform two pre-defined maneuvers in addition to two maneuvers of the pilot's choices. Judging criteria will be based on the smoothness and beauty of such maneuvers.

All contesting planes have to strictly abide to the following regulations :

  1. The contesting plane must be powerless glider,
  2. The contesting plane must be made by the contestant, it can be his/her own design or from a designed plan. Manufactured kits with wooden component parts are qualified but the contestant must get a proof that he/she built the plane himself/herself,
  3. The contesting plane must show the ability to sustain a meaningful duration of slope soaring

Depending on the number of contestants in the contest, the judging team may compose of three to four members who themselves are experience r/c pilots. There will be a trophy for the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up.

The contest will be postponed if the number of contestants is less than six. For those who are interested, please register with the contest director Ken Ma before 1st December 2006.

If wind speed is too weak in the contest day, the contest will continue with the static appearance competition in addition to, if any, the proof of the following evidence in airborne maneuverability with the scores awarded according to:

  • 4 marks will be awarded if a photo showing the airborne contesting plane together with an eye-witness testimony are given,
  • 2 marks will be awarded if only a photo showing the airborne contesting plane is given,
  • 1 mark will be awarded if given an eye-witness testimony only,
  • 0 mark will be awarded if both a photo showing the airborne contesting plane and an eye-witness testimony are not given.
